Professor / Acting Director General
Professor Sadaf Naz
Dr. Sadaf Naz is a human molecular geneticist who received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of the Punjab, Lahore for her pioneering studies on recessively inherited deafness in Pakistan. She conducted post-doctoral work at NIDCD, National Institutes of Health, USA on the molecular genetics of hearing loss in humans and animal models. In 2005, she was appointed as a faculty member at School of Biological Sciences, University of the Punjab, Lahore and established the laboratory for deciphering molecular basis of genetic disorders. The major focus of her research team is on exploring the genetics of recessively inherited, moderate to severe hearing loss, movement disorders, skeletal dysplasias, neurodevelopmental disorders, epilepsy and psychotic disorders using conventional methods or next generation sequencing technology. Personnel in Dr. Naz’s laboratory returns the findings to the participants as appropriate and some of them then use these results by seeking genetic counselling. A few participants have received better treatments due to the genetic diagnoses made available to them. The research Dr. Naz’s laboratory is or has been supported by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan, Pakistan Science Foundation, Pakistan, National Institutes of Health, USA, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Germany, Koshish Foundation, USA and Brigham Young University, USA.
